Volunteer
The bottleneck is engineers, not requests.
No shortage of organizations that need this. A serious shortage of people who finish things. If you write software for a living, you are the scarce input.
What is genuinely useful
- You have figured out how to move fast with current tooling. Not “I use an AI assistant.” You have shipped real systems at a pace that would have been implausible three years ago, and you know where these tools lie to you. That is the scarcest skill in progressive politics right now.
- You have owned something end to end. Nothing to running to documented to somebody else's hands. Rarer than writing code, and it is the thing volunteer projects fail at.
- Data engineering. Pipelines, warehouse modeling, matching and dedup. Most requested, least available, by a wide margin.
- Backend and infrastructure. Multi-tenancy, access control, the boring reliability work that decides whether a tool survives October.
- Applied ML with evaluation rather than vibes.
- Frontend that holds up on a five-year-old Android in a basement with one bar. That is where canvassing happens.
The commitment
A few hours a week for one project, usually six to twelve weeks. Predictability matters far more than volume: four reliable hours beat twelve enthusiastic ones followed by three silent weeks.
The honest failure mode here is people who start and disappear. If you are not sure you can finish, say so now rather than in week five.
Three rules, not negotiable
- U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident. Foreign nationals are prohibited from participating in decisions about U.S. election activity, under 52 U.S.C. § 30121. No workaround, including for unpaid work. If you are here on a visa we appreciate the offer and cannot accept it for campaign work.
- Your own time, not your employer's. If a company pays you for hours spent on a campaign, the law treats the company as having made the contribution, and corporations are barred from contributing to federal candidates entirely. Evenings and weekends. Not Tuesday afternoon on the clock.
- Do not spend your own money on a campaign's behalf. Your hours are free and uncapped. A domain, a cloud bill, or an API key you buy for a campaign is a reportable contribution with your name and employer attached. Hosting arrangements are worked out with the client, see how it works. If something needs buying, tell us first.
One more thing before your first commit: read your employment agreement. Many assign your employer rights to code you write outside work, and the protections vary a lot by state. Ten minutes now, very unpleasant retroactively.
How to start
Text Bookis with what you work on, roughly how much time you have, and whether the three rules are all fine. A link to something you built is worth more than a CV.
We will tell you where things stand instead of adding you to a list. There is more work available than people to do it.
